Coastal Demersal Finfish and Shrimp Resources Monitoring and
Assessment
Research vessels from the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (K.K. MERSUJI, K.K. MANCHONG, K.K. KERAPU III, and K.K. SENANGIN) conduct surveys on demersal finfish and shrimp annually.  These surveys are essential so as to provide information on the status of these valuable fisheries resources in order to provide scientific info for the implementation of fisheries management measures.

Monitoring of the Catches of Commercial Fishing Boats and Biological Studies on Commercial Species
Monitoring of the catches of commercial fishing boats and analyses of the catch data are conducted regularly at specific major fish landing centres all around the country.  This is done with the aim of following the changes in the performance of the fishing fleets in terms of catch and fishing effort.  Together with these monitoring studies, biological studies on certain selected commercial finfish, shrimp and mollusc species are conducted to provide basic information to supplement the findings from monitoring and assessment surveys.

Research on Fishing Gears
Research on fishing gears is being carried out with the aim of improving and adapting technology for use in local conditions. Studies relate to ensuring high efficiency and selectivity, thereby reducing detrimental effects on the fisheries resources. Thus promoting the use of environmental friendly technology.  For example, studies are conducted on the use of the square mesh in the cod end of commercial trawls and the application of automatic hand lines.
