Coral Ecosystem Studies

Biodiversity studies involving research on coral species and their distribution, together with fauna and flora associated with the coral reef ecosystems in Marine Park areas as well as non-gazetted areas are carried out.  Research on the impacts of human activities on coral reef ecosystems is also given high priority.

Mangrove Ecosystem Studies

Studies on the biodiversity in the mangrove ecosystem are conducted, and comparisons between well-managed areas versus exploited areas are documented. Impacts of human activities on this ecosystem and the adjacent coastal areas are studied. Information from these studies is used for planning and management of sustainable utilisation of mangrove areas to ensure that fisheries resources are soundly managed.

Seagrass Ecosystem Studies

The biodiversity and mapping of seagrass areas in Malaysia are being conducted.  Transplantation of seagrass to rehabilitate degraded areas, as well as to create new seagrass beds are also being carried out.

Artificial Reef Studies

Research on the establishment and designs of artificial reefs and their efficacy in resource enhancement is carried out.  Comparisons on the effectiveness of different inert materials such as boats, tyres, PVC, concrete and abandoned oil rigs as reef materials, and studies on designing specialised reefs for squids and lobsters are also carried out.
