THE LIBRARY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Library of the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) contains some of the fine collections of information and data on fisheries and related science in Malaysia and some parts of the world.  An accumulation of about 40 years.  The stock consists of around 4094 titles of books/monographs,  438 journal titles on fisheries and related science, and about 306 on general series.  About 23 are subscribed for the year 1998.  There are about 540 reprints and reports of significant importance from various aspect of studies.

The collection comprises all aspects of fisheries, such as fisheries identification, marine fishes and some on freshwater fishes, which previously, we had a large collection and subsequently transferred to FRRIC, Batu Berendam.  Breeding and culture of fishes, crustaceans, especially on prawns and some on crabs, cockles, mollusks and oysters.  We also have collections on marine science, marine biology, marine ecology, oceanography, pollution and limnology,  among others.

We have a special collection called the Malaysiana Collection , which houses publications produced by the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, such as the Fisheries Bulletin, the Fisheries Leaflets, Annual Fisheries Statistics, and the various charts and posters on Malaysian Fisheries, such as The Commercial Marine Fishes of Malaysia and the Freshwater Fishes of Malaysia.  They are for sale to interested enthusiasts at RM10.00 each and limited distributions for  a suitable course.

Subscription to important journals, however has been drastically reduced, mainly due to the price increase of foreign journals and the decrease in allocations.  However, we are fortunate to receive  around 3123 articles of free items from  organisations and individuals, either through exchange or gift ( In the form of Reports, journals, newsletters and entirely free reprints ), thus enriching the collection on fisheries studies in general.

Almost all acquisitions are catalogued and indexed, at the moment, using CDS-ISIS and WINISIS Data Base with about 4 formed data bases.  FRICAT for cataloguing and classification,  FRIP for listing of FRI's publications, SENJO for Listing of Journals and SERNAL for indexing of reprints.

The Library also has a few collections of CD-ROMs and hopefully, in future will try to acquire more if we are allocated with the library's own allocation.  The library has computer facilities for data base systems and another PC for internet browsing and CD-ROMs reviewing.  They are seen as not adequate for the continous and additional usage of internet.  Thus computer facilities for CD-ROMs should be acquired in future.
