Cooperation Between Libraries
There is existing cooperation between the FRI's library and the National Library of Malaysia, together with universities and other institutions around Malaysia. A group of around 200 institutions participate in inter-library loaning or presently known as "Library Supply System", whereby FRI's library can request for loans/photocopies of reference materials from these participating libraries, especially the university libraries. With minimum fees, through a proper channeling of the loaning form to the receiving libraries, requested materials such as journals, proceedings and monographs available there will be processed accordingly and subsequently sent to the requesting library. A number of researchers have benefited from this exercise.
The FRI's library as a main library for the research component of the Department of Fisheries always cater for researchers from the centres. In future, we will try to increase assistance to the Resources Centres/libraries of the branches in various aspects. The FRI's library Committee has put forward a comprehensive Library Planning proposal to be presented to the Planning Committee of the Department, for the purpose of upgrading the reference materials and facilities in libraries/Resource Centres of the whole of Department of Fisheries. This is especially for acquiring a specialised allocation to get the latest reading materials and CD-ROMs and a good networking and computerised data based system for cataloguing and indexing of reference materials , and ultimately be channelled on-line.
Membership for the library usage is especially for the Fisheries Management Group, The Researchers and their support staff. It is also opened to the USM Academic Staff and more particularly to students of the School of Biology and related subjects. The public is not unwelcomed, if they happened to drop by, but they can only refer, not borrow without prior arrangements.
The library is opened during office hours except for lunch hour from 1.00-2.00 pm. From Monday to Friday. Saturday is opened from the usual 8.00 in the morning until 12.50 pm. Sundays and Malaysian holidays are off. The library is managed by a librarian Ms. Nor Hadzirah Ramli and a Library Assistant Mrs. Thoghiroh Ibrahim.
