The responsibility of the fisheries department further increased through efforts to rehabilitate and protect fishery resources by issuing licences and management of resources rationally, introducing of artificial reefs for fish colonies to breed and formation of Marine Parks, such as Pulau Payar, in Kedah, Pulau Redang off Terengganu, and Pulau Tioman off Pahang.
Exploration of deep sea fishing on a large scale was launched jointly by the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and Thailand on 17 September 1987. Earlier, the department took steps to issue out licences and train fishermen for the big projects.
In the field of cooperation with national and international fishery agencies, the department established partnership or liaison with SEAFDEC, since 1967, BOBP (Bay of Bengal Programme), since 1978, FAO, NACA, ACIAR of Australia.
The year 1993 marked the beginning of a new era in development and contribution of fisheries towards the economy of Malaysia, especially when the new National Agricultural Policy spanning 1992-2010 aspires more developed deep-sea fishing and aquaculture.
The Early Achievements of the Fisheries Research.
The Most significant achievement of research component of the fisheries sector is the success in closing up of the life cycle of the Macro brachium rosenbergii or the freshwater prawns, carried out by researchers of FRI, in Penang. Still can be found in Malaysian rivers especially in rivers of Pahang and Perak. The other achievements would be improved methods of culture and farming of aquacultural products such as freshwater and brackishwater fish, and marine prawn and also the establishment of deep-sea fishing.
