The study was carried out using the RM7 Artificial Reef Grant started in 1998-1999 with the objectives to detect and measure the existing profile of the existing artificial reefs. The information collected will be used in determining the contribution of the artificial reef to the fisheries.  The study was carried out using equipment integrated between the echo sounder and the GPS.  Data can than be plotted into a 3D bathymetric chart. The project covers sites from Pulau Payar in the north down to Pulau Pangkor in the southern Straits of Malacca. The artificial reef area in Kedah waters have been mapped and profile calculated. Estimated maximum stock of grouper per 10 meter square was 15.25 kg/m square (concrete reef), 12.86 kg/metre square (Tyre), 35.80 kg/metre square (Boat) and 9.32 kg/metre square (natural coral reef)  (Zaidnuddin, 1999).
