Invitation to Participate

The fisheries sector is expected to contribute significantly towards achieving the goals and objectives of The Third National Agriculture Policy (1996-2010) (NAP3). These objectives include ensuring adequate supply of fish to meet domestic demand, capitalising on export market for selected high value products, conserving and managing fisheries resources on a sustainable basis.

Fish production is projected to reach 1.93 million metric tons annually by the end of NAP3 period. Although, the bulk of fish production is still expected to come from capture fisheries, a major increase in aquaculture production is also expected, bringing the present annual output of about 100 000 metric tons to 600 000 metric tons by the year 2010. With this projected quantum leap in fisheries development, new challenges are envisaged, including but not necessary limited to its sustainability and  other  issues of general concern. It is thus imperative for the stakeholders of this sector to discuss and deliberate on matters of common interests with the sincere intention of ensuring its sustainable development.
This national symposium aims to provide the platform and mechanism for the deliberation and articulation of ideas pertaining to national fisheries development issues. It covers a broad spectrum of topics which will hopefully enhance our understanding on the policies and strategies employed in charting the future direction of the national fisheries development, evaluate present achievements in the sector thus far, identify constraints and suggest possible solutions to the proper development of the sector. It offers an excellent opportunity for the exchange of ideas and information dissemination, strengthening of linkages and network establishment among researchers, resource managers, businessmen, feed manufacturers, food processors, policy makers and other non-governmental organisations.
This brochure is intended to invite you to submit papers of original research or information for the oral and poster sessions, to exhibit your fisheries-related products and services or to be a participant for obtaining the most up to date information in the fisheries industry. The Symposium will be convened at Grand BlueWave Hotel, Johor Bahru, Malaysia from 31st October to 2nd November, 2000.
